Mallow 2nds XV Claim Cup Double
25/04/2010 13:00 Dolphin 10 - 23 Mallow Musgrave
Park
After last weekends McCarthy Cup victory over Fermoy, Mallow returned to Musgrave Park confident of pulling off another victory against their illustrious city rivals.
In what was a very eciting encounter,Mallow needed extra time to win the Junior Three Cup with a 23-10 win over Dolphin. It was the father and son combination of Kevin and Eric Twomey with tries in extra time that decided this contest.
Dolphin raced into an early 10-0 lead with a try by Garoid Magner and a conversion and penalty by Dan Daly before tries in each half by Brian McMahon and Conor O’Donovan tied the scores and sent the game into extra time. A penalty by Billy Myers completed the scoring for the north Cork side in extra time.

14/02/2010 14:30 Highfield 11 - 5 Mallow Woodleigh Park Noel Moore (M.A.R)

The sides were level 5-5 at half time with Michael Cummins scoring a try for Highfield and Neil McSherry replying for Mallow.
Two second half penalties by John Sheehan helped Highfield to an 11-5 victory
Mallow were very happy with their performance taking away many positives before they resume there league campaign this weekend.
Great thanks to the vocal travelling support.

In the last remaining First Round tie Mallow defeated Shandon 31-0 at Whitechurch and will now face Highfield in the next round.
This was the North Cork side’s second victory over Shandon this season as they put up forty-four points without reply against the same opposition in their Leagu meeting at St. Joseph’s Road in the last series of League games before Christmas.

Presentation v Mallow @ Rathuard
Mallow 12-0 Charleville
It was a must win game for Mallow this weekend in the quest for survival in Division 2. And that’s exactly what we did. The game started with Owen Glynn and Hugh Keena making immediate incisions in the Charleville defence and it wasn’t long before the Mallow pack were inside their opponents 22. John Singleton was doing damage carrying ball up the centre using his sizeable frame to bust through gaps as if there were a snack box waiting on the other side. Charleville conceded numerous penalties in an attempt to turn the ball over but the shot at goal was declined each time in an attempt to make the pressure count and the ball was put into the corner. After numerous phases, Charleville’s defence held firm and they were allowed to clear their lines. Unfortunately for them, Des Golden, who was sporting an impressive mud afro, was under the ball, drew the defender and fed Leonard Browne who was coming at full pace. Two covering defenders were beaten before Leonard declined to pass to any of his supporting runners and do it all on his own! 5-0, cheers Lenny!
It wasn’t long before Mallow were back in the 22 again and this time the forwards were doing the hard work. After numerous pick and goes, Hughie Keena found himself at the back of a ruck and with Andy Cashman’s assistance the two powered over from 1 yard out. We’ll give Hughie the credit of the score though!! The conversion was landed and Mallow were into an early 12-0 lead. Wave after wave and line break after line break, the home side went in search of a third try with Owen Glynn’s non stick Teflon hands letting him down with the line at his mercy after a pop pass from Chopper which must have been intended for a midget it was so low. Other line breaks weren’t finished off and before long, Charleville got back into the game. An inside ball from……someone, was intercepted 10 metres out from the line by the Charleville wing forward who then blatantly knocked on as he ran up field. Liam Kelleher then decided to chop down his opponent with a brilliant tackle……..if he had the ball. As Mallow lined up for the scrum from the knock on, we were bewildered to find that instead of a Mallow scrum, Charleville had a penalty and Liam was trotting into the sin bin for tackling the man without the ball. Top notch decision but we had to get on with it.
The second half started with the familiar site of the Mallow pack in the opposition 22 but Charleville were finding it much easier to clear their lines back downfield aided by the strong wind they now had at their backs. Hughie and Owen were still swatting defenders away with ease and Brendan O Brien and Leonard Browne had numerous runs on the wings in space. The set piece was absolutely outstanding, best it has been all year with a lineout efficiency of over 90% on our ball and at least 50% of theirs disrupted. Gavin beanpole, I mean Lynch was the main reason for this lineout success and Jason Sheehan and Brian Daly doing likewise in the scrum. There were chances for more tries but none were converted. Charleville did enjoy more possession in the half but the strong Mallow defence kept the visitors scoreless and that’s how it finished.
So we’re still alive and with a fighting chance of staying in division 2 but nothing less than a win next weekend against Clanwilliam will be sufficient.
Mallow Team: Brian Daly, Frank Thornton, Jason Sheehan, Dan McCarthy, John McAuliffe (Graham Kelly), Gavin Lynch, Owen Glynn, Hugh Keena, Liam Kelleher (Jimmy Glynn), Andy Cashman, John Singleton (Conor O Donovan), Rory McSherry, Brendan O Brien, Leonard Browne, Des Golden
Mallow 29-12 Sunday's Well
It was Munster Junior Cup weekend and back to winning ways for Mallow. The team was badly in search of a win in any competition and we managed to maintain our great junior cup record against senior opposition which came in the form of Sundays Well. The game started in appalling conditions with Mallow kicking off into the far end of the pitch. ‘The Well couldn’t deal with the bar-of-soap-like ball and Mallow immediately went on the attack. A first score was inevitable as the Mallow forwards pounded away at the opposition while the like of John Singleton was doing a lot of “barrelling” through opposition lines again this week in the backline. And the first score did come after about 10 minutes of pressure……but it came to the opposition……here we go again. When the Well out half cleared his lines with a high garryowen, the Mallow back three failed to cleanly take the ball and their second centre somehow managed to hack it up field and showed great pace and control to touch down near the posts. The try was converted and the home side were stunned. We had owned the ball inside in the opposition 22 for the entire first fifteen minutes but still found ourselves down 7-0.
The response however was swift. Mallow were awarded a penalty which was kicked into the corner in an assault on the Wells line. The pack took the lineout and began to slowly inch forward nearer and nearer the line. After a couple of fine offloads, hungry winger Leonard Browne was the one who touched down. The backline felt like they had been stabbed in the back by one of their own as Leonard decided to join the forward back in pursuit of glory. Cheers Lenny, we’ll remember that!! The touchline conversion came agonisingly close but dropped under the bar into the strong wind so the visitors still led by two points. On the restart Mallow advanced to the opposition 10 metre line where the referee signalled a penalty advantage. Cashy took this as an opportunity of a free shot at goal with an ambitious drop kick from near half way but he managed to put on a smug, “I’m not surprised it bisected the posts” look as he jogged back for the restart. Not bad for a sick man!! 8-7.
I was about to feel much sicker however when self proclaimed leading try scorer Jim “Maggsy” Molony got in for Mallows second try after Chopper had made a burst through the middle of the Well defence and produced a brilliant offload for Maggsy to fall over the line. Leading try scorer with 3 tries……..we might be scoring more tries if he was out where he should be winning ball for the rest of the team rather than hanging around the centres for freebies he can grab and fall over the line. An amazing conversion from under the posts resulted which brought the scoreline to 15-7 nearing the interval.
Although Mallow came close to getting a third try before half time that’s the way the teams went in at the interval. On the restart, Sundays Well had the benefit of the strong wind while Mallow would be looking to keep ball in hand. The first 15 minutes involved the Well pounding our line but the defence was outstanding and held firm. It was a defensive lineout that went wrong that gave the visitors their reward. A 5 metre line out was tapped down awkwardly and an opposition player managed to dive onto it over the line before any Mallow player could react. 15-12, game on again. To make things worse Frank Thornton was yet again binned (needed a rest) for foul play (for falling over from fatigue onto an opposition player) and a temporary replacement in the form of Davey Walsh was needed for the set pieces. Frank was followed into the bin by Neil Lucey a few minutes later which seemed a very strange decision.
Mallow did go through a good spell when they began to play a better game style and keep it tighter. From a ruck about 30 metres out, Maggsy, while doing some nice ruck inspecting, spotted the fringe defence was idle and so in search of more personal glory picked and made a fine break through the middle. At this stage my immune system took a terrible turn, not from the flu virus, but from Maggsy’s impending second try!! Although a 19 stone prop did catch him, it was not in time for him to again, fall over the line under the posts. Another fantastic conversion left the scores at 22-12 but it was to get worse for the visitors a couple of minutes later. On a turnover, fantastic hands from a mixture of backs and forwards put Chopper in space with two players to beat. Great strength and power got him past the final opponents and again my team mates were worried about my kicking abilities as he went in under the posts for the third time that day. 29-12, game over.
It was the perfect pick up on the run into the important games in the league over the next few weeks. First time all year we notched up four tries but the win is what will please us the most. The next round will see us travel to play the winners of Kanturk and UCC which was postponed at the weekend. Heres hoping for a Kanturk win in that game!!!
Mallow team: Neil Lucey, Frank Thornton, Jason Sheehan, Dan McCarthy, John McAulliffe (Gavin Lynch), Jim Molony, Trevor Costello (Michael Lynch), Mickey O Connor, Rory McSherry, Andy Cashman, John Singleton, Conor O Donovan (Davey Walsh, temp.), Brendan O Brien, Leonard Browne, Des Golden
Mallow 9-0 Youghal
The venue was a wild and windy parkadillane for this important league encounter against Youghal. Before kick off, Mallow sat at the foot of the Munster Junior League Div. 2 with Youghal only a few points ahead. Again a number of changes were made to the first xv with Donal Lucey coming into the number two jersey and Gavin Lynch shifting to the back row. Brian O Connor (who I think from now on should be referred to as Screech) replaced the injured Rory McSherry at scrum half with Maggsy and Conor Donovan continuing their centre partnership from the Ballincollig game.
The game started at a frantic pace with Mallow having the assistance of the strong wind for the first 40 minutes. After just a few minutes Mallow had found themselves with good territory inside the visitors 22 after fantastic clearing kicks from Des Golden at full back. “Goldenballs” was again at a centre of an important incident in the game when from inside their own 22, the Youghal winger was put in space after a neat blind side move and looked home and hosed. Queue the former “Mo” legends blistering chase. With the rest of the mallow team, including yours truly, dragging their lungs up along the heavy pitch during the chase back, Dessie ate the ground up on the speedster to catch him with a great tackle 5 meters short of the line. But Goldenballs didn’t stop there, no sir, he then decided to flip onto his feet and rip the ball from the isolated player in a manor Richie McCaw would’ve been proud of. The rest of the cavalry arrived and secured an important turnover allowing screech to clear his lines with a fine box kick. This was an important reminder to the home team that we could not tune out for a second against a dangerous Youghal team.
After the Youghal kicker missed a poor penalty in front of the posts Mallow went on the attack once again and were awarded a penalty of their own just inside the 22 which Cipria… (Sorry, did that again) I mean Cashy converted. 3-0. To be fair to Youghal, they responded well and got back into the Mallow half against the strong wind but the home sides defence held firm. Another penalty was awarded to mallow on the 10 metre line at a slight angle but with the aid of a strong wind, they elected to kick at goal. Frank Thorntons advice to “do the lotto” after the kick went over was dismissed as over excitement rather than lack of confidence in his kicker!! Ivan “the thief” Bolster is claiming these three points should go down under his name as his index finger, which was holding the ball in the tee, was the last to touch the ball. This put Mallow into a 6-0 half time lead but they were well aware of the epic task of playing into the gale in the second half.
The second half started as expected with Youghal throwing everything bar the kitchen sink at the home side. Wave after wave was met with big hit after big hit and eventually these hits took there toll on seasiders’ moral. The one chance they did fashion came about 20 minutes into the second half when after a number of phases close in, they found numbers on the short side but Mallows drift defence worked a treat and forced the Youghal player to throw a dummy and step back inside only to be met by screeches brilliant covering tackle. It was a try that would have been conceded a few weeks ago and is testament to the work that has been put in on the defensive system in training. This moment turned the game. Once Mallow cleared the lines, aggression levels rose and Youghal could not cope. The forward pack began to hit rucks at a ferocious pace and with Frank and Graham replacing hooker Donal Lucey and second row Dan McCarthy, who had some outstanding carries around the fringes, the pack found a new lease of life. In the last 20 minutes Youghal may have been in possession for only 2 or 3 of these minutes. The Mallow eight starved them of the ball and at one stage picked and drove around the fringes from the half way line into the Youghal 22. The patience and control was a credit to the forwards and to scrum half screech who orchestrated things brilliantly from the back of the ruck. Big carries from Jason Sheehan and Captain Neil Lucey were like knockout blows to the Youghal side who at this stage were asking for the final whistle. Phase after phase after phase and Mallow inched closer to the line. With a sniff of a try on the way, Maggsy Molony decided to abandon his new found colleagues in the back line and rejoin his old haunt in pursuit of glory!! After some powerful carries (he has been training with Chopper recently) early in the drive, his moment of glory came when he and two of his team mates (no doubt the two boys were doing most of the work) powered over the line like something that resembled a mudslide. But the whistle never went. Jim, now used to his place in the backline, had been held up. It seems his scoring power on the pitch has finally slumped to the level of it off the pitch!!! The drought continues Maggsy!!!
The pressure continued to mount on Youghal and they were forced to give away a penalty in front of the posts which Andy tapped over to put the game beyond the visitors. The last five minutes finished as the previous fifteen had, with Mallow dominating possession, and the final whistle was, in a way, a relief to both teams. A relief to Youghal that their misery was over and a relief to Mallow that the first win was under the belt.
Even more encouraging was the fact that their opponents had been kept scoreless. The defence has improved no end, purely due to the work that has been put in on the training pitch. The backline too has been looking dangerous in recent weeks and they wait for a dry, non-hurricane type of day to finally open up and score some tries. The signs all around are encouraging. With this win, we jump up three places off the bottom of the league and with a tough encounter away to Abbeyfeale next week, a win could put us back up around mid table. From now on though, its just one game at a time.
Tribute must also be paid to Mickey O Connor for staying on for one more game before he departs the country during the week. We wish him well on his travels. It was the send off he deserved.

Challenge Cup Charleville 16 - Mallow 32
Mallow made the short trip to Charleville on Sunday 21st September to play for a third round place in the Munster Junior Challenge Cup. In very fine conditions Mallow opened the scoring straight from the kick off when the referee penalised Charleville for going to ground at the ruck. Andrew Cashman kicked the resulting penalty that gave Mallow an early lead in this local derby. Mallow continued to keep the pressure on Charleville for the opening period with Mallow's No 8 Michael O'Connor causing Charleville a lot of problems from the back of the scrum. Charleville however scored the first try of the game with a some good handling in the backs to set Charleville’s left winger racing towards the Mallow try line, excellent covering from full back Des Golden stopped the winger just meters from the line, quick ball from the resulting ruck gave Charleville the overlap that allowed them to score in the corner.
Poor discipline from Mallow allowed Charleville to further extend their lead with a penalty for a late tackle, but this was soon cancelled out by Andrew Cashman when he kicked another penalty to reduce the deficit to 2 points, Charleville now lead Mallow 8 - 6. Mallow's line out was excellent all day with Mallow jumper Dan McCarthy getting his hands to several of Charleville’s lineout’s. Towards the end of the first half Mallow began to increase the intensity and were rewarded with a try after excellent running from Mallow's outside backs to bring play to Charleville’s try line. Mallows forwards finished the move with a quick tap from No 8 Michael O'Connor to score under the posts. Cashman added the extras and soon after added another penalty just before the half time whistle to leave it Charleville 8 - Mallow 16.
The second half began with Charleville scoring another penalty to edge back into the game but Mallow further extended the lead when Cashman kicked two more penalties afters centres Jim Molony and Brendan O'Brien forced some desperate defence from Charleville to concede the errors. Mallows winger Rory McSherry always looked dangerous when he received the ball out wide and full back Des Golden was always a treat. Cashman scored and converted a try mid way through the second half to effectively end the game as a contest but Charleville continued to play with pride and were rewarded with a late try, but again Cashman kicked another penalty to end the game, Charleville 16 - Mallow 32. Mallow team Neil Lucey, Frank Thornton, Jason Sheehan, Ivan Bolster, Daniel McCarthy, Micheal Lynch, Graham Kelly, Michael O'Connor, Liam Kelleher, Andrew Cashman, Rory McSherry, Jim Molony, Brendan O Brien, Anthony Barrett, Des Golden.(Subs: Donal Lucey, John McAuliffe, Brian Daly, Gavin O'Keeffe, Brian O'Connor).
Challenge Cup: Newcastle West 22 - Mallow 23
Mallow RFC travelled to Newcastle West for their first competitive game of the 2008/2009 season on Sunday 14 Sep. This game was one of four in the province to kick off the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup.
In wet conditions, handling errors were common through out the contest, and the referee was kept very busy as both teams struggled with the new laws, especially at the breakdown.
Newcastle West opened the scoring within the first five minutes, their intent was clear early on to kick all penalties within range as their outhalf was very accurate. Mistakes from Mallow allowed Newcastle West to extend their lead further with two more penalties before Mallow's Andrew Cashman kept Mallow in touch with two penalties of this own.
Towards the end of the first half Mallow were camped on the Newcastle West line, but failed to protect the ball in the ruck and allowed Newcastle West to counter attack from their own line and score a try against the run of play, which they duly converted to lead Mallow 16 points to 6 at half time. However this Mallow team didn’t panic and began to show a higher level of fitness and determination, with Michael O Connor's quick tap and go resulting in Mallows first try soon after the restart. The Mallow lineout was functioning superbly with hooker Frank Thornton communicating well with his jumpers, and out half Andrew Cashman continued to boss the opposition with well placed kicks. Cashman added a further penalty to level the scores but Newcastle went into the lead again and surly thought they had done enough to win the game when they kicked two more penalties from long range to leave the score at 22 - 16 in the closing stages of the game. The Mallow pack continued to extend pressure on the Newcastle line and forced the Newcastle defence to make tackle after tackle, that eventually opened up the defence for Andrew Cashman to break behind the cover, and put Brendan O'Brien through to touch down under the posts. Cashman converted to give Mallow a one point lead over their hosts in the dying minutes of the game. Mallow will feel that they were lucky to progress to the second round of this competition, but they will build on the victory. Mallow now face a home game against Shannon’s St Senans next weekend, and look forward to their first home competitive game. Mallow Team Neil Lucey, Frank Thornton, Jason Sheehan, Gavin Lynch, Ivan Bolster, Micheal Lynch, Jim Molony, Michael O'Connor, Brian O'Connor, Andrew Cashman, Anthony Barrett, Gavin O Keeffe, Brendan O'Brien, Rory McSherry, Kieran O Gorman.(Subs: Donal Lucey, Ray Roche, Daniel McCarthy, Graham Kelly, Liam Kelleher)

Mallow 14 - Abbeyfeale 5
Mallow moved to 5th position in the Munster Junior League Division Two table with a 14-5 home win against Abbeyfeale on Sunday 17th February. Abbeyfeale had an early chance to open the scoring but a missed penalty left Mallow off the hook for an infringement from the opening kickoff. Mallow soon settled and began to dominate the game up front. Andrew Cashman opened Mallow's account with a well taken penalty after a strong break from No.8 Cliff Cahill. Mallow's front row of Tadgh Carroll, Jerry Cronin and Jason Sheehan dominated the scrums and allowed the Mallow backs to cause huge problems for the opposition. Cashman further extended Mallow lead to 6 points with another penalty, but to Abbeyfeale's credit they continued to battle and were rewarded with a try before the break to setup an interesting second half. Half time score Mallow 6 - Abbeyfeale 5. Directly from the second half kick off Mallow capitalised on some poor defence and Andrew Cashman tagged on a further three points with another penalty. Mallow's lineout functioned extremely well with hooker Jerry Cronin and jumpers Dan McCarthy and Gavin Lynch in total control of this set piece. Midway through the second half Mallow's Michael O'Connor touched down after an excellent drive from the lineout forced the Mallow pack over the Abbeyfeale line. Cashman narrowly missed the resulting conversion but Mallow took 4 points from this game and now have 23 points with two games remaining against Ennis and old rivals Ballincollig. Mallow Team Tadgh Carroll, Jerry Cronin, Jason Sheehan, Daniel McCarthy, Gavin Lynch, Michael O'Connor, Micheal Lynch, Cliff Cahill, Kevin Twomey, Neil McSherry, Brendan O'Brien, John singleton, Andrew Cashman, Leonard Brown, Kieran O Gorman.(Subs: Donal Lucey, Liam Leahy, Ivan Bolster, Rory McSherry, George Richard)

Mallow 34 V Newcastle-West 13
After several poor performances from Mallow in recent weeks, they eventually got their 2007/2008 season started with a bonus point win against newly promoted Newcastle West on Sunday 14th October.
An early penalty from Newcastle West gave the visitors the lead but Mallow soon stamped their authority on the game when John Singleton scored the opening try for the hosts. Andrew Cashman converted to give Mallow the edge. Mallow and Newcastle-West both scored penalties to keep the scoreboard ticking over but it was Newcastle West that took the advantage when Mallow's poor discipline allowed them to score their only try late in the first half. Mallow responded with a try from some excellent work by the Mallow pack. In the second half Mallow continued to extend their lead with try's from Cashman and scrum half Rory McSherry. Andrew Cashman had a brilliant day from the boot converting all Mallows try’s and kicking two penalties. Final score Mallow 34 - Newcastle West 13. Mallow Team. Neil Lucey, Frank Thornton, Tadgh Carroll, Ken O Neill, Daniel McCarthy, Jerry Cronin, Cliff Cahill, Michael O Connor(Captain), Rory McSherry, Andrew Cashman, Kieran O Gorman, John Singleton, Pierce Power, Brendan O Brien, James Flinn.
